ON-GOING RESEARCH

My research is focused on sedimentology and stratigraphy, especially the record of climate, sea-level and tectonic changes in the sediments and sedimentary rocks. I have a special interest in the linkage of depositional systems from source to sink. My research is mainly based on outcrop studies, in Precambrian to Quaternary successions.

Particularly:

  • deciphering climate and tectonic signals in fluvial successions
  • implications of changing climate and sediment supply on the evolution of shelf margins during sea-level cycles, especially the comparison between greenhouse and icehouse worlds
  • sediment budget partitioning along basin margins during sea-level cycles (source to sink budget)
  • initiation of sediment gravity flows, generation and dynamics of hyperpycnal flows, in greenhouse vs icehouse worlds
  • response of slope and basin-floor turbidite systems on sediment-supply and sea-level changes
  • understanding physical processes using fluid mechanics, implications for infilling of sedimentary basins
  • process regime changes (river-, tide-, river-dominance) during sea-level cycles
  • dynamics of cutting and filling of incised valleys, implications of sea-level change amplitude and sediment supply
  • sedimentologic and sequence stratigraphic analyses of metasedimentary rocks, Precambrian basins
  • decipher the signatures of tectonics, sea level change, sediment supply, glacier dynamics, etc., in stratigraphic successions

ON-GOING PROJECTS

RioMAR Consortium is a co-operative CSM-UT research program that aims to build predictive models for sediment transport from fluvial systems to deepwater areas. We are especially interested in the linkage of river mouth behavior and deepwater deposition; this includes identifying different types of mouth bars and what they tell us about further transport into deepwater, timing, the potential flow types, sediment volumes, lithologies etc. We work on predictive models, particularly regarding (1) how tides and waves critically influence sediment delivery into the deepwater areas of the basin as they modify river delta shorelines and fluvial effluents, and, (2) the mechanisms and conditions of sediment transfer from river mouth into the deepwater by hyperpycnal flow. The project consists of (1) field work on ancient successions in the Cretaceous Western Interior, Eocene Central Basin of Spitsbergen, Trinidad and the Karoo basin in South Africa; (2) comparison with modern systems, and (3) physical experiments and mathematical modeling. From UTA, Ron Steel and Dave Mohrig are the co-PI-s of the project.

Alluvial Depositional Models Consortium focuses on the style of fluvial deposition and correlation with lakebeds in Eocene Uinta Basin. Especially correlating the updip climatic and tectonic control with the downdip lake-level changes. Implications of their extreme Early Eocene climate on fluvial systems, and developing criteria for recognizing climate changes in the fluvial succession. Our aims are to make predictive models for fluvial architecture and potential reservoir properties, in framework of better understanding the factors controlling the lake level and fluvial sediment supply, as well as the location of the major fluvial conduits.

Tectonic and sedimentologic history of the Devonian Baltic Basin - relation to development of the Scandinavian Caledonides and German-Polish Caledonides. Devonian Baltic Basin research group: Piret Plink-Björklund (PI) and co-workers from Swedish, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish and Norwegian Universities and Geological SurveysThe dominantly siliciclastic Devonian Baltic Basin fill is sandwiched between Silurian and Upper Devonian carbonates, reflecting a major reorganization in the hinterland. The DBB fill consists of a transgressive portion where river deposits vertically change into estuarine and then successively into shallow-marine deposits. The transgressive portion is overlain by a up to 1000 m thick, southward-prograding tide-dominated to -influenced delta complex. Our hypothesis is that the transgressive infill accumulated in a back-bulge depocenter, whereas the deltaic deposits were transported across a pre-existing forebulge, from the Caledonian foreland basin, as well as the Caledonian thrust and fold belt. The project focuses on the tectonic and sedimentologic history of the Devonian Baltic Basin - relation to development of the Scandinavian Caledonides and German-Polish Caledonides.

The isolated sandbodies in the Western Interior Basin have generated debate over the last 40 years, because (1) they are anomalously coarse-grained bodies within otherwise shaley intervals, and thus producing or potential reservoirs, (2) the mechanism of their dispersal, far out onto offshore sites, has been especially problematic and debated, and (3) their occurrence and character can appear to be unpredictable.

We suggest here an integrated approach that combines detailed and systematic sedimentologic and stratigraphic analyses with petrographic and diagenetic studies, as well as studies of basin structure and subsidence, and changes in sediment supply in hinterland. We want to address (1) what parameters control the location, stratigraphic position and style of the isolated sandbodies, (2) how can we decipher the depositional evolution of the sandbodies and use that for constructing 3-D depositional and stratigraphic models, (3) how does the sandbody evolution, stratigraphic position and paleogeographic location affect reservoir properties, like heterogeneity, sandbody dimensions and connectivity, as well as porosity and permeability.

Palaeoproterozoic Västervik Basin
